Annual Tax Calendar: Key Dates to Know

January 15 – Final estimated tax payment for the prior year

If you make quarterly estimated tax payments, this is the final payment for the prior tax year (for example, January 15, 2026 covers 2025 taxes). This typically applies to self-employed individuals, freelancers, business owners, and others with income not subject to withholding. Making this payment on time helps avoid underpayment penalties.

January 31 – Tax forms arrive (W-2s and 1099s)

Employers and payers are required to send most tax forms by this date, including W-2s and 1099-NEC (non-employee compensation). Some forms, such as 1099-INT or 1099-DIV, may arrive slightly later. It’s a good idea to start organizing documents now, even if you’re not ready to file.

April 15 – Tax filing deadline (or extension)

This is the standard deadline to file your federal income tax return and pay any taxes owed. If you’re not ready to file, you can request an extension, which gives you until October 15 to file—but not to pay. Certain taxpayers, such as members of the military or those living and working overseas, may qualify for automatic extensions.

Also due: First estimated tax payment for the current year (see note below).

June 15 – Second estimated tax payment

This is the second quarterly estimated tax payment for the current tax year. Estimated taxes are generally paid in four installments throughout the year. Even though the spacing of the dates is uneven, paying on time helps prevent penalties and interest.

September 15 – Third estimated tax payment

This is the third estimated tax installment for the year. If your income fluctuates, this is a good time to review your year-to-date income and adjust future payments if necessary.

October 15 – Extended filing deadline

If you filed an extension earlier in the year, this is the final deadline to file your tax return. Extensions only delay filing—not payment—so any remaining balance due may already be accruing interest if it wasn’t paid by April 15.
